Hahahahaaaaa, I just LOVED this article :D. Managed to tackle the first two excercises, but was like WTF when saw the third one. That paragraph from the standard is interesting, though.

The mlocate is great tool, Ubuntu switched to mlocate. But I still found locate tool very annoying when I startup my computer - it takes about a minute to update database and my desktop is not very responsive.

This drives me crazy.

Is it possible to add some parameter to slow the updatedb proces down a bit? Some sleeps could help because I do not care how long it takes - all I want is to browse internet faster during the update.

I am offering to create the patch if there will be will to push it into the trunk ;-) Feel free to drop me a line via e-mail and I will do it.

Btw the Trac is broken - its not possible to create a new account (404).

Anyway thanks for this tool. Its great.

The C-like language you mention is, IIRC, called "ratfor". This is a FORTRAN with control constructs as you mention it, and it was presented in the "Software Tools" book by the same authors. If I recall correctly, there are FORTRAN and Pascal editions. At least one of them, and I think both presents the actual Ratfor pre-processor.

Amazon link for "Software Tools":

Deepsec, une conférence européenne attendue......

Au milieu d'un paysage que beaucoup jugent de plus en plus fade, Deepsec se démarquait clairement par un programme original et était déjà vue comme un évènement marquant avant même d'avoir eu lieu. Cette conférence a-t-elle tenu ses promesses...

The pascal feature is great, but it requires a bit more complex stack management of the compiler. The static father of the procedure has possibly not the nearest stack element (in situations such as recursion...).

For data manipulation libraries and IDE support are esential too. Mainly Java IDEs are great.
And java isn't the only language for the java platform. There are ports of several scripting languages, Groovy is designed to be scripting lang just for Java platform and lots of domain specific languages, for example jsp for web UI design.
